The process for planning a cruise (river or ocean) can greatly vary based on the length (how long you are sailing), type/destination, loyalty status, etc. While that can seem very intimidating and overwhelming there are general steps that all cruise bookings follow and knowing those processes can help make your planning experience smoother and your trip planning much more enjoyable!

You’ve chose a destination, narrowed down your preferred cruise line: what’s next? Essentially, once you have determined your ship and sail date you will be required to put down a deposit. The deposit amount varies by cruise line and the itinerary you are sailing. In most cases, some are non-refundable so be sure to understand your rates at the time of booking. You also need to make sure you have all government documents required for your sailing and that you have enough time to obtain new documents if you have lost your documents or you have a passport that is expired or will be within 6 months of expiry at the time of sailing! This is absolutely the most important component of booking any cruise!

Once you have booked your cruise you will want to work on linking your reservation to the respected cruise line and you may even be able to start making plans (eligibility windows vary). Your biggest next step is your logistics! You will need to start narrowing down and booking:

• Flights
• Pre-Cruise Hotel
• Car Services/Transportation
• Accessibility needs (dietary, scooters, CPAP equipment or other special needs)
• Travel Insurance (an absolute must)

Then you can focus in on all the fun stuff, like on board and port excursions.

Another key date to remember is the final payment. If you miss your final payment, your cruise will be canceled. The cruise lines are VERY FIRM on this! If you can ever pay prior to final payment date, it is highly recommended. Some cruise lines allow you to setup payment plans. Final payment also usually means you begin being in “penalty” i.e. loss of additional funds beyond a deposit. It is imperative you have read your cruise terms and conditions and understand the penalty schedule. This is one of the many, many reasons why having insurance is recommended. Insurance can cover things prior and during your trip (depending on policy you have chosen). You never know when you may have a family emergency before or during a vacation or if you will have an issue making it to the cruise (hello delays and cancellations, car trouble, etc.).

While this is a very generic explanation of the booking process, this is just a hint of the process I walk each of my clients through to ensure they have the vacation they are dreaming of!
